2006 Annual Banquet

General Membership Meeting
and Awards Presentation

Editorial by Candice Bell, Banquet Chair

On February 18, 2006, a record number of members and friends of "The Clan" gathered at the Storrowton Tavern, West Springfield, MA, for our annual dinner and presentation of annual awards. This "family" affair celebrates our club and recognizes the accomplishments of our beautiful Black and Tans for the year 2005.

Our guest speaker for the evening was our own Maureen McLatchy. Maureen offered sage advice regarding training techniques used to reach whatever goal we aspire to with our dogs – no matter how lofty those aspirations, there is always a way and there is always an answer to every obstacle or hurdle – never give up!

The TarTan Challenge Trophy, High In Trial, donated by Nancy Large in honor of Ch. Ravenwoods Black Pepper CD WD, was formally presented to Ms. Jane Thomas and Buteo’s Bandanna of Tri-Sett UDX, "Bannie". Jane retired this trophy at our Specialty show in October 2005.

On behalf of The TarTan Gordon Setter Club, Maureen McLatchy detailed the following:

A Very Special Gordon and Her Owner

"A Challenge trophy offered by Nancy Large in honor of CH Ravenwood’s Black Pepper CD WD was recently retired at the TarTan Fall Specialty. The trophy was offered to the owner whose dog, or dogs, won High In Trial three times at a TarTan Specialty. In the eleven years that TarTan has offered obedience, we have had 5 HIT winners come from Novice B, and 6 from Open B class. Two dogs had multiple wins, all from Open B. Buteo’s Bandanna of Tri Sett UDX (J. Thomas/K. Gatchell), with owner/handler Jane Thomas, retired the trophy with a record fourth High In Trial win, out of Open B, on October 10, 2005.

Bannie was the third Gordon Setter to earn a UDX title. She is a joy to watch and is very animated. She loves to please and always tries her best. She has had many exciting wins in her career, both at specialties and at all breed trials."

Congratulations Jane and Bannie!

Our Awards Chair, Debby Freidus, then presented 22 of TarTan’s beautifully detailed rosettes with special, personalized award certificates to our honored recipients.

It is TarTan tradition to recognize individuals who have donated their time and energies to our Club and our Breed. This year, TarTan chose to honor Susan DeSilver and Richard Dwyer. President Larry Clifford awarded each honoree with a special gift basket, and shared anecdotes.

Susan DeSilver has served as TarTan’s field trial chairman for more years than can be remembered and it is the many hours that she puts in a saddle and her devotion to the event that makes it continue to thrive over the years.
Richard Dwyer has been deemed the Chief Cook and Bottlewasher, as well as secretary, for our annual New Hampshire hunt tests. Always ready with a big grin, Richard draws in both the experienced and the novice, and then works harder than anyone to keep them coming back for more…..

TarTan is blessed to have so many hard working individuals in our ranks, and this year’s are two of the best.

The evening’s raffle, once again coordinated by Cindy Fitzgerald, netted our coffers almost $300.00. A special thank you to Bill Fralick and Jay Kitchner for the sale of a record number of tickets, and for twisting a few arms! The proceeds from this event are earmarked for TarTan’s National Scholarship Fund!

Thank you all for coming, a very good time was had by all, and we look forward to all that our Black and Tans bring us in the coming year.
